I don’t know a lot about thermal optics. This is my first one. I haven’t done a lot of shooting with it, but it is very cool! It has been a lot of fun testing out and playing with it a little bit. Seems to be great from what I can tell.

I was looking for a thermal for a Colt 6920. I wanted something with more eye relief like a reflex sight as opposed to a "rifle scope". I ordered a different product initially, but it had eye relief issues, a mouse print screen menu, cryptic instructions and questionable quality control (the impact point was way off center indicating the sensor or base were misaligned etc. It just seemed to be a cobbled together product that actually cost a lot more money. I returned that product and decided to skip that vendor).I picked up the Echo3 which was cheaper by several hundred dollars. The one button function/menu options are so much easier than the other product (searching through mouse print menus on the screen). It's easy and intuitive to change zoom settings, reticle selection or color palate. The eye relief is what I was looking for, more of a reflex sight without needing reading glasses. The 30 mhz refresh rate is not an issue for my uses, (targets 50-100 yards. As another reviewer said, you're not going to 'clear a room' with it. It's powered by two CR123's (as opposed to a rechargeable battery the other unit had). For me, this is a plus as replacement CR123's are easy to come by where an AC source for the charger may not. For me it is easier to have a few extra throw away batteries than have to recharge. As far as fit and finish, no issues. Weight and size are similar to my Eotech. A really nice feature is the automatic 'hibernate mode' if the rifle is not moved after a couple minutes and instant 'power up' if moved. There is also an auto power down feature if left on for an hour or something. Overall the thermal imaging is clear and usable. The reticles are sharp. There may be newer stuff on the market or coming out (Holosun?), but the Sig unit does the job for me.

This scope is pretty decent considering how small it is. I like how I can attach it to my scope rings and sight it in with my day time scope. Super convenient. Just aim your day time reticle at something and then zero in your thermal to that same mark. No shots required. I actually managed to shoot a raccoon from 100yrds after sighting it in like that. I look forward to trying it out coyote hunting. The zoom makes the picture quality garbage. I wish I would have spent a couple k more and got a pulsar. I think I will be able to manage to shoot coyote from 200 yards max. I’ll be hesitant to shoot past that due to the poor picture quality when zooming in. 0-200 yards, this scope is badass. I have had success with a sight mark wraith and sniper hog IR light from 300 yards. Can’t do that with this one. Might be a domestic dog. I did pick up heat image from cows that were at least 1,000-2,000 yards away. Battery life is about 5 hours if you’re using it a lot. If Sig will make the zoom quality better, it will make this scope better than most. Huge screen makes it where you can set it towards the middle of rail just make sure you turn the brightness down cause you’ll light up the whole field.

The thermal was a great concept, however I could not get the clarity I was looking for. I had trouble identifying small animals at 30 yards. For a starter optic this would be great, but for a more advanced user it is hard to step back to that clarity.

I purchased the SOEC31001 through opticsplanet. As soon as I powered it on, I noticed a suspiciously small field of view (FOV). I measured the actual FOV using the 1x zoom setting, measuring the distance at which an upright 12 inch (305mm) aluminum bar fully fits in the circular display. I measured that distance to be at least 300cm. This corresponds to a true displayed FOV of ~5.8 degrees, vastly less than the advertised 10 degrees. When I called Sig Sauer product support, I was told that the 10 degree field of view is the theoretical viewable angle projected across a diagonal of the rectangular 320×240 pixel sensor. There is however, no way for a user to see these "theoretical" corner pixels using this scope's firmware and display. I was also told that the viewable angle is larger when counting the possible set of angles by changing the reticle zero. This is not unlike claiming an optics scope FOV to include the full range of turret adjustment angles. Even so, the corners would still not be seen on the display. No matter how Sig Sauer manipulates language, the true user viewable angle when using the scope is in fact dramatically less than the claimed 10 degrees (and based on my measurement, about 5.8 degrees). In my opinion, this is deliberate misrepresentation and false advertising. This is disgraceful business conduct, and I will not be buying from Sig Sauer again.

I saw the negative review and decided to take the shot anyway. The concept of a reflex thermal intrigued me. In my area, the longest shot I will take will be around 200 meters due to foliage and micro terrain. Obviously, I don't need a super highspeed ATN or PAS 13. I mounted it to a Sig 716i chambered in .308/7.62×51. The weapon itself, shooting Red Army standard, is probably 3 MOA so there aren't going to be any B4 championships happening in my backyard. This optic is perfect for my use. Eye relief is perfect, target pickup is perfect, and the multiple palettes allow me to relive my childhood fantasies of chasing Arny through the jungles in South America while I make weird alien noises. The menu cycling is intuitive. The optic was near zero'd when I threw it on the rail. All in all, for my situation, this optic rocks. I may take it off and put it on my CZ Scorpion to make a CQB build, but right now only communist coyotes are invading, so I'll keep it on my .308.
